Based in Bratislava, the Pressburg Mint in Slovakia uses state-of-the-art technology to breathe new life into the city’s centuries-old coin minting tradition. To enable these efforts, the private company purchased two X1 160Pro metal 3D printers from a binder jetting expert. ExOne. The printers will be specifically used to manufacture silver bullion coins as well as high performance steel coins for other industries.
Bratislava’s coinmaking tradition dates back to the early 15th century, when it was granted the right to mint coins. Over the following centuries, the city would mint coins for the Holy Roman Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. By the 18th century, however, the city’s minting activities had largely ceased. So far, that is.
The Pressburg Mint will use its new ExOne 3D printers, the largest of the company’s metal binder jetting systems, to produce numismatic and silver bullion coins. In fact, one of the X1 160Pro systems will be exclusively dedicated to processing 925 silver. One of the first hit projects for the 3D printer is a series of ultra high relief silver coins depicting a crowned lion. The pieces, which have a mirror finish and blue diamonds, will be showcased at Formnext 2021 next week.
The other system purchased by the Presburg Mint of Slovakia will be used for printing 316L stainless steel and other materials. This system and the precious metal 3D printer are also available as a service through the Mint’s new Printy division. Printy will operate the new 3D printers and work with external partners to produce and deliver metal parts.
“Our two X1 160Pro systems will allow us to take our designs to the next level with large-scale metal 3D printing in Central Europe,” said Radoslav Behul, CEO of Printy at Pressburg Mint. Traditional minting and minting techniques have limitations in terms of creating three-dimensional designs, so the use of additive manufacturing will truly open up a whole new world of design opportunities for collectibles at the top- relief and in 3D.
